Join us at the first Wellington alumni event for previous participants in the IoD’s Emerging Director, Mentoring for Diversity & Future Director programmes.
We look forward to hosting you at this panel event exploring previous participants’ experiences during and after their involvement with our development programmes.
We’re delighted to welcome our panellists, current Emerging Director Awardee in Wellington, Manea Sweeney, along with Jason McDonald, previous EDA joint winner in 2016 and Mele Wendt, Future Director in 2016.
Moderated by Jackie Lloyd, herself a participant in the diversity programmes, panellists will draw out their learnings, talk through the paths they have journeyed on since, and any advice they’d give their former selves.
After the panel, attendees will be invited to connect and share stories until the evening closure.
CMInstD
Manea’s career has focussed broadly across environmental, planning and engagement in the Infrustructure industry, working across New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. She loves complex uncertain environments. Manea is new to governance, and won IoDs emerging director award for 2023. She has served a 3-year term as executive director on the Tonkin + Taylor Group Board, is an observing Board Member of Experience Wellington, and is on the project Boards for Te Ara Tupua Alliance (delivering the shared path from Nga Uranga to Petone in Wellington), and the East Coast Recovery Alliance, delivering over $500M of rebuild in road and rail following cyclone Gabrielle.
She is a proud mum of a 2 year old, who provides more challenges (and joy) than all of her other roles combined. Manea is also undertaking her Masters in Maori and Indigenous Leadership through the University of Canterbury.

Jason is a professional director and independent consultant with expertise in electricity infrastructure and renewable generation. Jason is currently an independent director of diversified energy infrastructure provider Clarus, electricity distributor Orion and electrical design, construction and maintenance provider Connetics. He is a director and shareholder of Helios Energy, a privately funded developer of utility scale solar generation.
Formerly he was director and chairman of car share Mevo for six years and was an independent director of electricity distributor Top Energy and transport provider Red Bus
MInstD
Mele Wendt MNZM, has 25 years of governance and 17 years of management experience. In her early career, she was a high school teacher, and later, was the founding Pacific islands liaison officer and manager of the student recruitment office at Victoria University of Wellington, before becoming the executive director of Fulbright New Zealand – a role she held for ten years.
In 2019, Mele was awarded a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for her services to governance, the Pacific community, and women. In 2022, she was the recipient of the Not-For-Profit Governance Leader Award at the Women in Governance Awards, and is also a White Ribbon Ambassador and a member of various professional and community groups.
Mele currently chairs Wellington Community Fund, and serves on the boards of Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (The Correspondence School), the Real Estate Authority, Tāwhiri: Festivals and Experiences, Tokelau International Trust Fund, ANZ Bank (Samoa) Ltd, and The Helen Clark Foundation. She is also the National Vice President - Central Region of P.A.C.I.F.I.C.A. and provides consultancy in governance training, Pacific peoples’ development, organisational capacity building, scholarships management, and mentoring.
Mele’s heritage is a mix of Samoan (Malie, Vaiala, Lefaga) and Palagi (NZ, Britain). She is married to Eteuati Ete - they have four grown-up children and four grandchildren, and Wellington has been her home for more than 35 years.
CFInstD
Jackie Lloyd BA, BCom, CFInstD, is President of the Institute of Directors and a National Council member. A life-long interest in the relationship between human behaviour and business performance led Jackie through an executive career as the global human resources director for the New Zealand Dairy Board and NZMP Fonterra, to consulting and governance. She is currently chair of Naylor Love Enterprises Ltd and director of CentrePort Ltd. Jackie is also Deputy Chair of the Lion Foundation and a board member of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
Jackie’s previous governance roles include AgResearch, Kiwi Group Holdings, NZ Post and New Zealand Cricket.
