IoD Otago Southland Branch announces 2021 Emerging Director Award winner

Brad Hurndell has been named the Otago Southland Branch Emerging Director for 2021.

Brad is General Manager and Director of Queenstown-based Shotover Systems. He is also a member of the board of Film Otago Southland Trust and on the Mainland Angel Investors Board.

Jason Tibble of Dunedin has been named runner-up.

Trish Oakley, Chair of the Otago Southland branch of the Institute of Directors, says, “The Otago Southland Branch Emerging Director Award was established to foster and recognise upcoming talent in governance, supplementing the IoD’s focus on mentoring, formal training and access to leading speakers at events for aspiring and practising directors across the region”.

In choosing Brad for the annual award, the selection panel says that his desire to look for opportunities beyond business as usual to help strengthen an organisation’s position is a valuable asset and his unique range of experience brings creative and diverse thinking to the board table.

“Brad’s natural curiosity means that he is not afraid to challenge," the judges said.

"He has high standards, a sense of responsibility, and his engineering background has developed his natural problem-solving skills and understanding of technology and risk that will serve him well in the future.”

Brad is motivated to show SMEs the benefit of good governance for growing businesses, especially in the tech sector. He is passionate about using information to solve complex problems and make effective decisions. He also understands the challenge of striking a balance between governance and management, and the effect of this on business results and company culture.

As winner, Brad receives complimentary membership of the IoD for 12 months, as well as attendance at branch functions, $1500 towards IoD professional development and mentoring with an experienced director for 12 months.

Regional Commissioner recognised by the Institute of Directors

Dunedin-based Jason Tibble, Regional Commissioner of the Ministry of Social Development, was named runner-up.  The committee recognised Jason for his level of experience and achievements to date in commercial, public sector and not-for-profit organisations, and his strong desire to give back through his governance roles.  Jason holds a number of governance positions including Chair of Southern Zone – New Zealand Rugby League, Trustee of Sport Otago, and Trustee of Grow Dunedin Partnership. Jason will receive 12 months mentoring with an experienced director.

The selection panel noted that, “Jason clearly has a passion for the organisations he’s involved with, bringing diverse experience and an innate ability to bring together different perspectives. He is a natural leader, facilitating conversations to bring out the best in people and values learning from others to strengthen his own skills, to solve problems, and to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organisation he governs.” 

The branch committee would like to congratulate all those who entered the awards, and look forward to seeing them build their governance careers in the region. The overall quality of applicants was outstanding, and bodes well for the future of governance in the Otago Southland Region.
