Join us for a panel with Dame Farah Palmer and Sarah Leberman on governance in sport and challenges in today's world.
The sporting arena is no longer just the realm of the sports people and officials involved in the game. As sport has evolved and professionalised, sophisticated commercial entities have developed to the point where today sporting codes are competing aggressively against each other not only for players, coaches, officials and spectators but also for revenue and business success.
Some of these commercial entities are operating domestically and internationally with hundreds of thousands of people involved in all elements of the game. To ensure these entities are successful and sustainable it’s no surprise that effective governance is acutely important.
We are delighted to have secured a stellar panel who will share insights about the commercial realities, the public scrutiny, the passion and the pressure of being a director involved in sports governance.
You’ll hear from the Deputy Chair/Chair of the NZ Rugby and NZ Māori Rugby Boards, as well as the founder and co-chair of Women in Sport Aotearoa and previous board member at Volleyball New Zealand, Western Netball and Hockey Manawatū, who’ll speak to how they have delivered effective governance and how crucial it is to ensure financial success and that the needs and desires of their stakeholders are met. The fact that these stakeholders are so diverse brings a unique set of challenges, spanning as they do, volunteers to multinational corporate sponsors.
Our panellists Dame Farah Palmer and Sarah Leberman will explore governance of sporting organisations and the realities of the modern world, including the importance of bringing a lens on Māori governance while working together as a board to uphold the principles of Te Tiriti.

Professor Dame Farah Palmer is Pou Ākonga/ executive Director of Ākonga Māori Success in the Oddice of the DC Māori at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa (Massey University) and her governance roles currently include Deputy Chair of the NZ Rugby Board, Chair of the NZ Māori Rugby Board, SportNZ Board member and most recently joined he Pūhoro STEMM Board.
As former member of the New Zealand's women's rugby team, the Black Ferns (35 Tests, 1996-2006) she captained the team to three consecutive Rugby World Cups, was inducted to the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2014, and in 2022 New Year Honours, was announced a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (DNZM) for her services to sport, particularly rugby.
She is a wāhine Māori on her own cultural and professional journey, trying to be impactful in the tertiary, sport and governance space while juggling motherhood and her own wellbeing.

Sarah is co-founder and co-chair of Women in Sport Aotearoa. She has been involved in sport all her life, both on and off the field. She is a leader in the field of sport management, helping to establish Massey University’s academic programme, and has had tremendous influence through her research into women and leadership in sport and academia.
An advocate for facilitating opportunities for girls and women in sport at all levels, Sarah was recognised as NEXT magazine’s women of the year (sport) in 2018 and was a finalist in the 2016 Westpac ’Women of Influence’ awards in the diversity category.
With previous board experience at Volleyball New Zealand, Western Netball and Hockey Manawatu, Sarah has also been ‘hands-on’ at the highest level as manager of the Black Sticks women’s hockey team.
She was elected to the Massey University Council for a 4-year term, 2020-2024, and in 2020, Sarah was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for her services to women, sport and tertiary education.
